UV Flashlight
Take your caterpillar finding abilities to the next level with a TCL branded ultraviolet flashlight!
Many caterpillars fluoresce brightly under ultraviolet light. This curious phenomenon has unlocked a game-changing technique when it comes to looking for caterpillars: going out at night with an ultraviolet flashlight!
Having first learned about using UV lights to look for caterpillars from a teacher in Ohio in 2016, The Caterpillar Lab brought this past time to the attention of the natural history community and has championed it over the years since!
For more than a decade, The Caterpillar Lab has tested a broad range of UV flashlights and watched the technology improve dramatically. The lights we’re offering today combine the features we value most for caterpillaring in the field, outperforming all other flashlights we've used in the past!
• 365 nm wavelength: This wavelength of ultraviolet light produces relatively little visible light, meaning that if a caterpillar does fluoresce, it will do so brightly and stand out against any backdrop of leaves!
• High-intensity new-generation UV diodes: Illuminates caterpillars at greater distances; far more effective than older, multi-LED “flat-top” designs.
• Stable, non-overheating performance: Unlike many UV lights that can shut down unexpectedly after just minutes of use, these flashlights remain steady through extended sessions in the field!
• USB-C charging built into the flashlight: Our flashlights feature a rechargeable battery, which does not have to be removed for charging purposes thanks to a built in USB-C charging port on the flashlight body! No need for a separate, bulky battery charger - you only need a USB-C cable, like the one included with your purchase!
• Field-friendly design: An LED screen displays the current battery life of your flashlight when it is on, compact size, lighter than similarly bright lights, and reasonably priced for a tool you may carry (or lose) in the field.
